3 Ways to be the best bridesmaid ever by Oahu wedding photographer

I have to be honest with you, whenever a bride and I are discussing wedding ideas and she tells me that they’re not going to have bridesmaids and groomsmen, I just squeal “YES!!”. This year is my 7th year of photographing weddings, so I think I’ve seen just about anything. I’ve photographed some amazing bridal parties and some not so great bridal parties. I’ve photographed weddings where the timeline was tight and we were even more behind, and other were everything went so smooth the bride and groom had time to sit down and refresh for 15 minutes before family formals.

Now that I’m getting my blogging game on, I wanted to write some educational blogs, for brides, family members and their bridal parties. First one up,

How to be the BEST bridesmaid ever! (Or maid of honor):

  • Hold the bride’s dress please.

One of the saddest things I’ve seen at some weddings is when a bride has 8-10 bridesmaids and she’s walking around holding her bouquet and her dress so it doesn’t get dirty before the ceremony. I always joke around and I’m like “there’s a reason its called brides”maid”, use it. 😉 But in all seriousness, if you see the bride trying to pick up her dress and hold her bouquet, go and hold it for her. If you’re not, don’t worry, I’ll ask you to, nicely. 😉

  • It really is about HER.

I get it, you want to look great. You’re going to be in all these photos and you don’t want to look like you just woke up. You even managed to lose 10 pounds before this wedding and oh my goodness, you look amazing! And you should 100% feel good about that. But, – and you were definitely expecting that “but” – its not your wedding day, its your best friend’s wedding day. She’s the one that’s marrying the man of her dreams. And she hand picked you to stand by her side on her favorite day. That’s a pretty special honor.

If you think you would need more time to get ready, get up a couple hours earlier and start getting ready. It’s always a bit of a hassle when a timeline gets pushed back because the bridesmaids aren’t done yet. Don’t be that gal. A little side note, please don’t take this in the wrong way, this is not meant to be in a snippy, “Veronica knows best” kind of post. I believe that if you were to read this a few weeks before your best friends wedding, you would be able to make the changes necessary to make it the best experience for her and for you.

  • You’re here to serve the bride.

This one goes hand in hand with the one before. Now when you look at the word serve, its not about the bride ordering you around and you doing what she says. It’s truly just serving her on her wedding day, to make it the best day possible. Here’s a couple ways to serve her.

    • bring her a small breakfast while she’s getting ready. She probably won’t want a huge meal, but something small will make sure she’s getting the nutrients needed. And water.
    • Make sure she’s drinking water. It’s something she will easily forget.
    • remind her how beautiful she is and take photos with her. It’s sad how many times I see bridesmaids taking selfies by themselves or with each other and the bride waiting on them on the side.
    • if something goes wrong, try to fix it, and whatever you do, don’t tell the bride until the day is over.

Like I said previously, this isn’t a “VERONICA IS BASHING ON ALL THE BRIDESMAIDS” type of post. All the ways I’ve reminded you to serve the bride are things I’ve seen some awesome bridesmaids doing for their best friend. I was only a bridesmaid once, for my oldest sister’s wedding, even though I don’t have much experience with it, I’ve experienced over 100 weddings as a photographer, I believe I’ve seen a lot of it.

And let’s not forget, have the best time beside one of your closest friend, as she celebrates her marriage to her now husband!

I hope you enjoyed this type of posts! I’d love to hear what other posts you’d be interested in reading about! Let me know in the comments below!
